Trisha’s Brown Bread

I’ve tried for ages to find a bread recipe that is easy enough to prepare, make and cook. I’m not into waiting for things to rise or prove, I just like to weigh, mix and cook.

It goes down well with the whole family, I like having it with my poached eggs, or a slice or two with a bit of relish, ham & cheese under the grill make a super quick lunch toastie. The kids have a slice with breakfast and there is always a slice available for a quick snack whenever needed.

This recipe makes 2 decent loaves which lasts us a week or so. Continue Reading

Upgrade to Olympic

In my very first post here I copied a short paragraph from a booked called ‘Who dares runs‘ by the über fit Gerry Duffy. Gerry is someone I admire for his desire to always try harder, go one better or just push himself a little bit further than he did before. In both ‘Who Dares Runs’ & his second book ‘Tick, Tock, Ten‘ Gerry mentions the requirement to step outside ones comfort zone as a way to improve your lot, the only way to get better is to step up a level. That’s where I got the name for the blog from… Continue Reading

Whats happening in the Food & Recipe section!

Here are some recipes that I’ve found useful over the years. I will generally try to keep things healthy but basically I’m a firm believer in the philosophy that if you cook something from scratch (or as close as possible) it will be infinitely better for you than something store bought.  Continue Reading

Progress!

I wrote back in January about being a little despondent about where I was with my training and fitness, injuries were getting me down and I wasn’t really getting anywhere.

I was injured, then I wasn’t then I was injured again. it was very frustrating but I was continually working with my physio and trainers in the Sports Surgery Clinic in Santry towards getting stuff done, no matter what was working or not at the time. Their key advice is to come out of an injury stronger than you went into it. Continue Reading

Hanging in there…

Well, I’m still injured. 7months and counting now and it’s getting very frustrating. My main fear is that I’ll fall out of love with running and go back to ‘the old ways’. I know that’s unlikely but the fear is still there at the back of my mind.  Continue Reading

Bad days begone.

I recently wrote about getting back on the horse and kicking off the training again after a long injury lay off, combined with some very slack personal motivation. I’m still injured in that I cant run, but that doesn’t preclude me getting out into the pool or pushing some weights.  Continue Reading

Getting back up again…

It’s been a while since I’ve been here, most of my blogs seem to start with that!

After competing in TriAthy I haven’t exercised continuously with any real conviction. This is mainly down to injury but that’s only half an excuse. I have a pretty bad case of ‘Plantar Fasciitis‘; it’s a foot condition, particularly sore in the morning but the pain is increased with running. So bad that if I ran a 5k now, I wouldn’t walk for 3 days afterwards. It’s a bitch to repair and rest is the main prescription from the physio.  Continue Reading

Mens Health Week 2013 (#2)

I’m just back from speaking at the launch of a report into mens health (Link HERE) with the Irish Cancer Society. The occasion was the launch of a report they had commissioned in conjunction with the Institute of Technology Carlow & the National Cancer Registry. I was a little puzzled initially when contacted and asked to speak – but after reading some of the details in the report and listening to the other speakers, it became clear.  Continue Reading

Mens Health Week 2013

This is the full text of my presentation this morning (11th June 2013) at the launch of the Irish Cancer Society’s report titled “The Excess Burden of Cancer Among Men” today as part of Mens Health Week 2013, according to statistics, men can be up to 3 times more likely to get common cancers than women; and are more likely to die from it as well. I’ve given this talk a number of times and I went off script a couple of times, most of it you have heard me say what I have outlined below before, but this was a new audience and regardless of how many times you hear it, Mens Health is a very important topic and the more people that get to hear the message, the better.  Continue Reading

One year on…

I was asked a while ago to write a guest blog on the Safefood website. (Link Here) This is what I came up with, sorry it has taken me so long to post it, but I’ve been neglecting the blog. I’ll try to rectify that as much as I can…

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time” – Thomas Edison

One year on, 35kg (about 5.5st) lighter, 1 marathon , 4 half marathons and over 1000 miles run in training, that’s a complete lap of Ireland! Continue Reading
